Leave of Absence

We’re here for you, whether you need to take time off to bond with the little one you just welcomed to the family, recover from an injury, or care for an ill family member.

Medical Leave

Eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of medical leave for the following reasons (review full details in the US Guide to Affirm):

  • To care for the employee’s parent, child, spouse, domestic partner, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, or parent-in-law with a serious health condition.
  • The employee’s own serious health condition renders the employee unable to work at all or to perform the essential functions of their position.

Parental Leave

Eligible birth parents and non-birth parents may take 18 weeks of paid leave for the following reasons  (review full details in the US Guide to Affirm):

  • The birth of an employee’s child and to bond with or provide care for that child, within one year of birth.
  • The placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care and to bond with or care for the newly placed child, within one year of placement.
  • Incapacity related to pregnancy, prenatal care, or the mother’s own serious health condition following the birth of the child.

Additional Types of Leave

While less commonly taken, there are a number of other leave types you may be eligible for depending on your circumstances. Get familiar with all of your options by referring to the US Guide to Affirm.

Cocoon

We are partnered with Cocoon to ensure US employees are fully supported throughout their parental leave (birth or placement of a child) and medical leaves. The Cocoon team supports employees transitioning out of and back into work. They will also reach out throughout the leave with some tips and guidance.

Cocoon is here to help you, every step of the way:

  • Leave Updates: Any updates to leave dates will need to be entered into Cocoon. They will be able to make updates to your leave once you have created your Cocoon account.
  • Claims: You may be eligible to receive benefits from state programs while on leave. Cocoon will help you file for these programs and check any claims that have already been submitted. Applying to these programs will ensure you are paid the maximum amount of pay while you are on leave.
  • Your Leave Pay: You will continue receiving pay from Affirm, but Cocoon will be taking over your payroll calculations and incorporating any claims into your pay. Over the next couple of pay periods you may notice changes to your pay as Cocoon makes the necessary adjustments.
  • Coordination: Cocoon will help to coordinate the remainder of your leave. This includes communicating with you and your manager.
